Urban school districts face budgetary woes and soaring utility costs as part of their operational challenges. The East Providence High School’s aging boiler system left the heating system close to failure, a situation which would have forced the re-location of 2,000 students. While the East Providence School District had originally scheduled replacing this system in 2009, it was moved forward to 2007. The District selected the ADI/ATC team in a competitive solicitation to provide the design, removal of, and construction of a new heating plant and distribution system. The system included three 250 hp dual-fuel boilers, a 150 kW generator, a 25,000-gallon underground oil storage tank, and other heating system upgrades. The system’s will have the flexibility to burn fuel and natural gas. The team also installed a generator to be used as emergency backup. The team also replaced the domestic hot water system, which included asbestos abatement, tank and heat exchanger installation, and web-based controls that notify operators of any system problems. |
